JCU DENTAL BUILDING

This award winning training facility at the
Cairns Campus of James Cook University
(JCU), includes a world-class clinical
simulation laboratory plus prosthodontics,
anatomy and microbiology facilities.
The building was completed ahead of time
and under budget. Many engineering
innovations and challenges were involved,
including a stunning 9m high feature glazing
frame with stairs cantilevering off the inside
and an innovative steel roof truss system
integrated with a perimeter column and eve
framing system.

Project Achievements

Project achievements included the following:
• Unique preassembled ‘bolt on’ screens and sunhoods
erected seamlessly through a prefabricated cladding
system;
• A complicated transfer roof system linking different level
roofs;
• A cantilevering concrete stair landing supporting a hanging
wall and roof;
• An innovative unjointed basement wall;
• High Commendation Award for Project of the Year at the
2010 EA Cairns Local Group Excellence Awards
